Canada’s Veterans have put their lives on the line for all of us and our government will always be there to support them.
This week, our government delivered on our commitment to bring back a pension for life for our Veterans, after a decade of neglect by the Harper Conservatives. These pensions offer a combination of benefits that provide recognition, income support and stability to those who have a service-related illness or injury. It will also allow recipients to determine the form of compensation – either monthly payments or a lump sum – that works best for them.
Pension for Life represents an additional investment of close to $3.6 billion for our Veterans. When combined with the well-being programs our government has already announced in previous budgets, our total funding adds up to over $10 billion.
Veterans have asked for a monthly pension for life, enhanced supports, a simpler system, and a more positive service experience. We are delivering.
While every Veteran is different, one unifying experience the have reported is the major life change that come after leaving service. The most successful transitions occur when a Veteran is supported by a balance of financial, mental, physical and social factors. We understand that financial stability is critical but is just one factor for a Veteran’s overall well-being.
That’s why we also continue to strengthen the support available to Veterans and their families. We are delivering on a strong mandate that will restore critical access to services and support for financial independence. This includes re-opening nine Veterans’ Affairs offices across the country, hiring more support staff, providing up to $80,000 in post-secondary education funding for Veterans through the new Education and Training benefit, and increasing the Disability Award to a maximum of $374,000.
Veterans now have a pension for life that will empower those living with a service-related injury or illness to determine the form of compensation that works best for them and their families. It is what our Veterans’ deserve and it is what our government has delivered.
